I wanted to call my credit card company in Japan to stop them because I was afraid that if someone else misused my credit card I would be in trouble. The card I dropped was a co-branded card for a gas station so I couldn't remember if it was JCB or VISA. I didn't even know where to call so I decided to call my family and ask them to look at the contact information on my statement at home. Because of the time difference between Hawaii and Japan it was midnight in Japan when I called. I thought maybe no one would answer the phone but luckily my mother answered in a sleepy voice. When I told her that I had dropped my credit card she made a big fuss about it and woke up my father and brother who were also sleeping. He didn't know where my credit card statement was so he had the whole family search my room in the middle of the night. I was worried about whether the statement was there or not when I called the second time but they found it right away. I wrote down the contact information for the lost statement and immediately called my credit card company internationally from Hawaii to have them stop the card. I never thought I would be calling my family internationally for such an errand. As I am currently living abroad I make international calls to my family in Japan once a week. Since I live in a country of immigrants the rates for international calls are relatively inexpensive and I am happy to be able to use international calls as if I were making domestic calls. It was more than 20 years ago when I first traveled abroad. At that time international calls were very expensive and I could not make the calls I did when something happened. I was not able to make international calls because I had no idea how to make such calls or what country codes to use. The city where I live is famous as a tourist spot so I encounter Japanese tourists when I go out on the street. Many tourists nowadays seem to carry smartphones with them and since there are many free wifi spots many of them are talking with their family members in Japan by using apps that allow them to make phone calls at those places.
