I was a member of the company so I often traveled to Asia Europe and the United States. Cell phones were just starting to appear and only about 30% of people still had them. If you wanted to contact friends or family from abroad you usually called them through an international phone service. Because of the high cost of the calls they were only used in case of emergencies. Even though I traveled abroad a lot I have only had a few experiences. One time I was on a business trip to Albuquerque NM USA for 10 days during which my father was scheduled to undergo surgery to remove cancer. The doctor told me to be prepared for any eventuality because of his advanced age but I couldn't cancel the trip so I promised to call him and went on my business trip as planned. The day after the surgery I made an international call home from the hotel where I was staying. Since many people make international calls at hotels there is a pamphlet with detailed instructions on how to use international calls by the telephone. The country code for Japan is 81. I remember how relieved I was to hear that my father's surgery was a success and that he already had an appetite even though it was the day after the surgery. If something should happen to him during my business trip I will be able to stand by his dream pillow for the rest of my life. My father died 12 years after that surgery. The phone bill I used was reimbursed when I checked out. International phone calls between the U.S. and Japan are inexpensive compared to other countries and I think the cost was less than 1000 yen even though we talked for more than 10 minutes. The cost would be 4 to 5 times higher in Europe and South America. Copyright (C)2021Story of contacting friends and family by international phone from abroad. All rights reserved.
